How did we get so distracted?

When we fall into that mindset, we lose sight of what matters and start to disconnect and numb ourselves from emotions that could distract us.

We become forward focused, unable to be present and enjoy the moment. We find it so uncomfortable to be left alone with our thoughts that we put on armor to shield away any feelings.

But fighting with emotions makes it worse.  And every time the armor is used it strengthens the habit of avoiding emotion, reducing our window of tolerance.
